Corporate Profile
Crystal Ventures was founded in 1997, and has grown into a family of funds that conducts value-added venture capital investing in the North America and Asia.
The management of the Crystal family of funds views today's technological innovation as a global event with strong localized flavor. The team is focused on facilitating the pervasive growth and development of that innovation worldwide - with special focus on North America and Asia. Crystal is also interested in companies that have trans-Pacific synergetic operations with proven technology and products, market potential, exemplary management teams, and other unique resources particular to Silicon Valley, Taiwan, Singapore, and mainland China.
Investment Philosophy
Coming from experienced operational backgrounds, all Crystal partners regard themselves as both venture investors and entrepreneurs, and approach their investments with noted passion and disciplined methodology. Crystal views technology, people, and market as the core of any successful company, and regards the collective set as "must-have" criteria for placing all investments.
Crystal partners believe the integrity of an entrepreneur or executive is just as important as his or her ability. They regard each investment as a long-term commitment to creating and sustaining technological innovation in daring new companies, and engage with teams that share in that vision. They are most interested in companies that are revolutionizing the way people live and conduct business. Some of the Crystal portfolio companies are: Cobalt Networks [(COBT), acquired by Sun Microsystems (SUNW)], About.com [(BOUT), acquired by Primedia (PRIM)], Sina Corp. (SINA), Ejasent [acquired by Veritas (VRTS)], Open Solutions (OPEN), exavio, Elemental Software [acquired by Macromedia (MACR)], LGC Wireless, RF Solutions [acquired by Anadigics (ANAD)], and Powerbridge Technologies.
Investment Focus
Crystal invests in early- and development-stage technology-based opportunities. Its three primary areas of focus are infrastructure and communications, enabling technologies, and vertical applications and content. Currently, it is interested in enabling technologies and application solutions in broadband, wireless and vertical applications that are based on existing infrastructure and platforms. Crystal invests in experienced and talented management teams that are developing innovative core technologies in a growing market. Crystal will lead, co-lead or take a membership role in an investing syndicate. Its preferred initial investment ranges from $1.0 million to $5.0 million. Crystal partners generally hold a board seat, and participate actively as observers in other cases. An investment by the Crystal Ventures family of funds gives portfolio companies access to its extensive worldwide network of financial, investment banking, distribution, manufacturing, and funding relationships.
